Beginning with "A True Story

In the 1980s, in order to improve the ecological environment and save the then critically endangered Danding Cranes, the Coastal Mudflat Rare Bird Nature Reserve was established in Yancheng, where the Danding Cranes winter every year. 1986, Xu Xiujuan, a 22 year-old crane girl, travelled from the Zalong Nature Reserve of Heilongjiang Province southward with 3 eggs of Danding Cranes in her arms, with the plan of cultivating an artificial population to enhance the stability of Danding Crane flocks in the area. Xu Xiujuan's family has been raising cranes for generations, and her father once told her, "Raising cranes is a job that the country needs, so you have to do it practically, and you can't lose when it gets tough." She took it to heart. No matter how hard the conditions were at the beginning of the construction of the reserve, she did not have a single complaint.

Danding cranes were all Xu Xiujuan had. At that time, artificial incubation was a worldwide problem. But she succeeded in hatching all three eggs by warming them with her body heat. The young cranes, which had just broken out of their shells, were very sensitive to temperature, so she held them in her arms and nest day and night. Under her careful care, the wings of the cranes became fuller and fuller every day. 1987, a cranes lost their young, Xu Xiujuan looked for two days, and when she heard that someone heard the cranes singing by the river, she dragged her tired body into the water again and went into the depths of the wetland, but never came back.
