**China Flowers & Horticulture** is supervised by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration and sponsored by the China Flower Association. It was founded in January 2001. Guided by the publication concept of "documentary, innovation, popular science, culture, and civilization", it aims to guide the high - quality development of China's flower industry and meet people's needs for a better life. Before the interview with Wang Kunyao, the general manager of Yunnan Juyang Horticulture Co., Ltd., he was receiving a visiting team from Vietnam. Due to urban expansion, a large number of flower production enterprises have moved out of Dounan in recent years. Juyang is currently the only flower production and planting base in the core area of Dounan. The phalaenopsis here are shipped all over the country and exported to Southeast Asia. Colleagues from various places often come to visit and negotiate, demonstrating its exemplary effect. Juyang is a well - known phalaenopsis enterprise in China. By 2024, it had been established for 35 years. Its headquarters is located in Guangdong, and it has production bases in Guangdong, Yunnan, Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Taiwan (China), and the United States. It annually supplies 4 million flowering phalaenopsis plants and 8 million seedlings. In 2025, 5 million flowering plants will be supplied to the market. The production base in Guangdong covers an area of 300,000 square meters. Besides phalaenopsis, it also produces anthuriums, peace lilies, alocasias, and foliage plants such as money trees. In 2008, Juyang started to look for partners in Yunnan to produce phalaenopsis. In 2018, it built a factory in Yunnan, and in December last year, Yunnan Juyang Horticulture Co., Ltd. was officially established, with a facility production area of 300,000 square meters. In addition to phalaenopsis, the Yunnan base also produces hybrid orchids and cymbidiums, including oncidiums, fragrant odontoglossums, miltonias, and dendrobiums.

Wang Kunyao joined Juyang after graduating in 2018 and witnessed the development of the Yunnan base from scratch and from small to large. These six years coincided with a period of rapid growth of the domestic phalaenopsis industry. "When I joined the company, there was only one base in Songming, Yunnan, with a monthly output of only 2,000 plants. Now there are five bases, with a monthly output of 200,000 plants," said Wang Kunyao. ## Completing the Base Layout At present, Juyang's production layout in Yunnan is basically completed. From north to south, there are the Songming, Kunming, Jiangchuan (Yuxi), Kaiyuan, and Xishuangbanna bases. By taking advantage of the different climatic conditions in each place, the company can reduce costs and make its products more competitive in the market. Among them, the Kaiyuan base is mainly engaged in high - temperature seedling cultivation, while the Jiangchuan, Songming, and Kunming Dounan bases are mainly used for low - temperature flower forcing. "Phalaenopsis are products that rely entirely on facility cultivation. When forcing flowers in Yunnan, only a little air - conditioning is needed at night in summer. However, in Guangdong, air - conditioning needs to be turned on for most of the year. Yunnan has significant advantages in flower - forcing production. Guangdong, Beijing, and Kunshan (Jiangsu) are close to the sales markets, and the Taiwan base focuses on exports," said Wang Kunyao. Juyang's base in Kunming Dounan covers an area of 40 mu. Entering the large multi - span production greenhouse, phalaenopsis seedlings of different specifications such as 2.8 - inch, 3 - inch, and 3.5 - inch pot diameters are available. There are also gift box packages specially prepared for Teachers' Day. As a flower - forcing base, it forces flowers in batches every month, and different stages of seedlings, peduncle seedlings, and flowering plants can be seen. The base has achieved automated management of fertilizer and water irrigation. There are only 11 workers in the 17,000 - square - meter greenhouse, mainly responsible for inserting flower sticks and packing.

Wang Kunyao told the reporter that depending on the pot diameter, it takes about one and a half to two years for phalaenopsis seedlings to bloom, and the flower - forcing period is six months. The 2.8 - inch pot products are mainly variegated flowers, mainly for regular sales. The 3.5 - inch pot products are mainly supplied to the New Year flower market. The base has also specially set aside an area to produce the popular dragon orchid in recent years. The pot diameter reaches 5 inches, mainly for the New Year market. A normal phalaenopsis plant usually has about 10 flowers, while the dragon orchid has 25 - 30 flowers. It takes up more space, requires a longer cultivation time, and its price is three or four times that of ordinary phalaenopsis. Currently, the output of dragon orchids is not large, only a few thousand pots per year. The Dounan base produces 100 varieties of phalaenopsis annually, with an average variety rotation every two or three months. Solid - color varieties such as the white 'Ama', red 'Man Tian Hong', and pink 'Bai Fen Jia Ren' are more popular. Interestingly, the market trend is sometimes hard to predict. As Wang Kunyao said, "Some varieties were thrown into the trash can five years ago, but now they are picked up and sold again, and at two or three times the original price." Juyang adopts a production - planning and stable - supply strategy. The monthly shipment volume of the Yunnan base is about 200,000 plants. Together with bases in Guangdong and others, the monthly shipment volume is about 300,000 plants. It does not make more production plans for the New Year flower market to reduce the impact of market uncertainties. "With the current facility conditions and turnover capabilities, the off - season is actually more advantageous for us. Other bases ship very few products, and July is the peak sales period for us. There are few finished flowers seen in the base," said Wang Kunyao.
